The Game

Join this wacky caravan  of cultist sorcerers in a desperate attempt to convince an eldritch horror to NOT devour their world!

The Doomsday Cult: Summit Penance is a jam game meant to be placed in the same world as another jam game of mine: "The Doomsday Cult". It's a 2D side-scroller platformer that requires you to perform sacrifices along the way to progress.

Run, knock enemies out, throw them in sacrificial pits,  recruit new cultists, and more!

EDIT: I uploaded a patch that contains no additional content, but fixes an issue with some screen sizes. The original build is still available for download.

  The Controls

If you prefer WASD:

  • A / D : Move your character.
  • Space: Jump.
  • W / S: Pickup an object below you / Open Doors.
  • Left Click: Throw / Special Move.

If you prefer Arrow Keys:

  • Left/Right arrow: Move your character
  • Space: Jump
  • Down/Up Arrow: Pickup an object below you / Open Doors.
  • Z: Throw / Special Move.

Controllers are partially supported (no UI indicators). To choose a level or a cultist, you still need to use the mouse (sorry!)

  • D-Pad or Analog Stick: Move your character.
  • southmost button: Jump
  • west/east buttons: Throw / Special Move
  • D-Pad down/up or north button: Pickup an object below you / Open doors.

  The Jam

This game is an entry for Mini Jam 110: Sacrifice.

The theme Sacrifice is used as a game mechanic. The characters have to sacrifice creatures, objects, and even themselves in order to clear the path towards the summit.

The limitation Failure is Inevitable is implemented both in the story of the game and the mechanics. At the end of every level, the cultist needs to sacrifice themselves to let the caravan progress, making you lose valuable recruits.

This is a late submission: The game was made is 4 days instead of the usual 3. I wanted to finish my idea, despite knowing that I went a little overboard, so I ended up using an extra day to make the game stable, and add a few core mechanics  and some content. This is the most effort I've ever made for a jam game - more than 30 hours of work.

  The Cultists

There are four playable cultists. Each of them have their own pros and cons. You can hire cultists if you have enough sorcery coins, but they are always random!

The Ordinary: The green cultist has no special abilities. However, it's the easiest to play with, and the most reliable.

The Bouncy: The yellow cultist jumps high and can charge a super jump by holding the left click. However, they bounce around A LOT.

The Speedy: The red cultist is fast and nimble. Their special move makes they run wild, be careful!

The Frosty: The most powerful of all cultists, they can use their ice cold powers to freeze nearby enemies. However, using too much ice has left their feet a little... slippery.

  The Content

The world hub has 3 levels.

  • You start at the first one. It's kinda a tutorial level.
  • The exit leads to the second level.
  • However, the tutorial level has a secret exit to a harder trial.
  • The trial is a gauntlet of challenges: each section is easier with a specific  type of cultist.

  The Known Issues

  • Enemies get stuck in walls sometimes.
  • Sometimes you double-bounce on fish when jumping on their tails

  The Final Words

I hope you all enjoy this game, please let me know in the comments! This one was so fun to make, I'll probably keep working on it after the jam.
